“Outside taking a phone call. I’ll get her.” I look around and see what my kids are doing. Paris is now trying to grab Jordan’s broken pinky and Sydney is laughing at the weird sounds her Grandma Paula is making. Noting that they’re fine, I make my way back outside.
“I can’t” Spencer talks into the phone. “Ashley has a meeting at four…yeah…I know.” She sighs. The person on the other end speaks. Spencer just stops pacing and stare at me while rolling her eyes at whatever the caller is saying. “I have to see what Ash says first…yeah…bye.”
“What’s up?” I ask while sitting down on the little step that leads to the front door.
“Yesterday after work I got a job offer.” She sits down next to me. She’s so close; she may as well sit on my lap.
“What?! Baby that’s fucking awesome.” I grin and grab her face for a quick kiss.
“Ash.” She laughs and pushes me back. “You don’t even know what it’s for.”
“Details…details…” I wave it off. “As long as you get a raise in pay…ow.” I grab the arm she punched me in.
“Shut up.” We stop laughing and sit holding hands.
“So?”
“They wanted to make me head nurse.”
“That’s sounds awesome!” I beam.
“Yeah, but I don’t want it.” She sighs.
“What? Why?”
“I just don’t.” She stands. “Can we talk about it later?” She looks down at me. “At home.”
“Are you okay?” I ignore her question to ask my own.
“I’m fine.” She scuffs her foot on the ground, a clear sign that she wants me to drop it.
“Are you sure?”
“Don’t make this a big deal, Ashley.”
“I’m not trying to, Spencer.” I stand. We just stand and stare at each other.
