“Thanks for lunch.”
“Thanks for dinner.” We smile at each other.
Spencer came over about an hour after she got off work. When she got here she told me she was happy I called. She said she was worried about how I would take her letter and the lunch. I told her the truth. I loved it.
We just got done eating the dinner I made, and now we’re just sitting at the kitchen table staring at each other.
“So you’re my girlfriend, huh?” I grin at the blush that appears on Spencer’s face.
“Shut up.” She rolls her eyes and throws her napkin across the table at me.
After the dishes and the kitchen are taken care of, Spencer and I make our way to the living room.
“Do you want to watch a movie?” I wheel up next to the chair she’s sitting in.
“Um…” She looks down at her watch. “Actually I can’t stay much longer. I have an early morning tomorrow.”
“Okay.” We just stare at each other until I break the silence. “My mom was my favorite person.” Spencer just smiles at me, encouraging me to continue. “My dad was great too, but my mom was a stay at home mom, so we spent more time together.”
“Do you have siblings?”
“Nope. Asia and Toni have always kind of been like my sisters.” I smile thinking about all the crazy shit we’ve done together. “They always thought my mom was the coolest.” I laugh at the thought. “Asia parents are by the rule book kind of people and Toni’s are very Christian. My mom was just relaxed. She never tried to force anything on me. It was always about expressing how you feel and asking questions. I never felt I had to believe something because my parents did or feel a certain why because someone else told me I should. It was always about just being Ashley.”
“Did that DVD have something to do with your mom?” Spencer asks hesitantly.
“Yeah,” I sigh. “Little Women. It was her favorite movie. I remember us watching it about a thousand times.” I take a minute to gather my thoughts. I take one of Spencer’s hands before speaking again. “It’s an old movie, so before we only had it on VHS. I got her the DVD for her about four years ago.” I shrug. “I know it might sound lame to you, but it’s simple and important to me. It’s part of memories I’d like to keep just between my mom and I.”
“I can understand that.”
“I’m not a closed up person, Spencer.
