Gage: "For all intensive purposes, if Ashley and I were to meet a girl at the same time and I told her that I was in to said girl, Ashley would back off." I nod along cause I know that she would. "She would back off for two reasons, one, because she's not the type to get into relationships, therefore, why would she make a move for a one night stand when she knows that I'm into them. And two, she would back off because she'd think that I was the better choice." My eyes narrow and I go to speak, but Gage cuts me off. "I'm not saying that I am the better choice, it's just how Ashley would see it."
Spencer: "I agree with that." I say sadly.
Gage: "I know that if I had told her that I was in to Jessica all those years ago, Ashley would have never slept with her." I watch Gage's face closely and see a hint of remorse. Clearly she regrets not speaking up then.
Spencer: "So what does that have to do with me and now?" I ask her slowly.
Gage: "Cause Ashley fell in love with you. And maybe, just maybe, she may still think that I am the better choice. That maybe I could make you happier than she could make you. But," She says dramatically. "I couldn't. And it's time that Ashley sees that. I mean, sure, we'd make a smoking hot couple," She says as looks over at me with a half smile. "But we wouldn't be good for one another. And that's something that Ashley has to understand. That what you guys have is rare....like, really rare." Silence falls between us as she just smokes her cigarette. Spencer: "What do you mean?" I ask eventually, really curious to what she has to say.
Gage: "I can't explain it." She says after some time. "It's just...this thing that surrounds you guys. Like...a bubble or something. It's like...the world stops for the two of you. I don't know." She confesses as she shakes her head a little. Spencer: "You think it's weird too, don't you?" I ask after another long silence. Gage: "What's that?" I watch Ashley stand in the middle of the field, alone, staring at the dirt looking miserable and lost again. I stand there and try to read her mind.
Spencer: "I told her that I wasn't going to Ohio and she still hasn't done anything. You agree with me, don't you, that it's weird." She takes a long drag on her cigarette as she considers.
Gage: "Yes."
